Chinese health authorities reported a rise in acute respiratory illnesses among children due to various pathogens, as pediatric departments nationwide dealt with an increased caseload. According to the South China Morning Post, National Health Commission spokesman Mi Feng highlighted that the surge was attributed to the influenza virus, rhinoviruses, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and adenovirus.
Mi emphasized the importance of medical facilities sharing real-time information on pediatric and fever outpatient services’ demands, urging schools to take adequate preventive measures. The SCMP also noted Mi’s call for implementing robust epidemic prevention measures in densely populated areas like schools, childcare centers, and nursing homes.
Hospitals received instructions to enhance patient grading systems for identifying severe infections more effectively. The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that different age groups were affected by various pathogens, with influenza notably impacting all age ranges. Wang Huaqing, the CDC’s chief immunization planning expert, pointed out mycoplasma pneumoniae infections predominantly in the five to 14 age group, while other age ranges were affected by different combinations of viruses.
