Going to the hairdresser is often seen as a relaxing and indulgent experience. However, a rare condition known as Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome (BPSS) is turning what should be a pampering visit into a potential health hazard for a small number of people.

This condition, first identified in 1993 by American neurologist Dr. Michael Weintraub, has been linked to strokes caused by neck positioning during hair washing at salon backwash basins.

How Does It Happen?

Research suggests that the awkward angle required to rest one’s head over the rigid rim of a backwash sink can result in neck strain, injury, or—on very rare occasions—a stroke. Overextending the neck, sudden jerking movements, or prolonged positioning during shampooing can compress or damage the arteries supplying blood to the brain.

In some cases, bone spurs in the spinal column may exacerbate the risk by pressing against or tearing nearby arteries. This interference with blood flow can lead to a brain attack, or stroke, caused by either a blockage from a blood clot or the rupture of a blood vessel.

Who Is at Risk?

While BPSS is exceptionally rare, women over 50 are considered more susceptible, particularly those with preexisting conditions such as arthritis or vascular issues. However, experts caution that anyone, regardless of age or health, could theoretically experience BPSS.

A 2016 Swiss study found only ten instances of BPSS reported over an 11-year period (2002–2013), making it a significantly less common occurrence than traditional strokes. Despite its rarity, awareness of the condition and its symptoms is crucial.

Symptoms to Watch For

Symptoms of BPSS may not always appear immediately and can include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Neck pain
  • Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body

These signs can overlap with those of conventional strokes, making diagnosis challenging.

Staying Safe at the Salon

While the risk of BPSS is extremely low, experts recommend taking precautions to minimize discomfort and prevent potential harm:

  1. Position Adjustments: Ask to lean forward over the sink instead of tilting your head back.
  2. Neck Support: Request a padded neck support or use a rolled-up towel for added comfort.
  3. Gentle Handling: Request a slow, gentle wash to avoid sudden movements or pressure.
  4. Monitor Time: Limit the duration your neck remains in an extended position.

Striking a Balance

For most, visiting the hairdresser remains a safe and enjoyable activity. Beyond physical grooming, it also plays a vital role in boosting mental health, self-esteem, and confidence. By taking a few simple precautions, clients can enjoy the benefits of salon visits without worry.

So, next time you head to the salon, don’t forget to speak up for your comfort. After all, self-care should never come at the cost of your health.
