CEO, FSSAI Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao presented the book on Standards of Millets to CODEX Chairman, Mr Steve Wearne

During its 46th session in Rome, Italy, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), an international body for food safety standards formed by the WHO and FAO of the UN with 188 member countries, lauded India’s Millets Standards. India’s proposal for global millet standards, covering 15 types with 8 quality parameters, garnered widespread acclaim at this gathering. Currently, Codex standards only encompass Sorghum and Pearl Millet.

India advocated for comprehensive global millet standards, focusing on Finger, Barnyard, Kodo, Proso, and Little millets, akin to pulse group standards. This proposal received unanimous support at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, attended by representatives from 161 member countries, including the European Union.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, commended the Indian delegation during the International Year of Millets, stating India’s pivotal role in promoting millets among the masses. This proposal aims to spotlight millets and their worldwide benefits, setting a benchmark.

The Indian delegation, headed by FSSAI’s CEO Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, proposed these international group standards, considering both the “International Year of Millets” and the escalating global trade in these products. With the CAC’s endorsement, India will initiate the submission of project documents and the drafting of standards. The 15 millet type standards, specifying 8 quality parameters (including moisture, uric acid, and defects), form a crucial groundwork for these global standards. Additionally, existing Codex standards for Sorghum and Pearl Millet will be reviewed in this process.

This session marks the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s 60th anniversary, with India as a member since 1964. India’s active involvement includes chairing 12 EWGs and co-chairing 28, contributing to various Codex standards and guidelines. Noteworthy Indian proposals cover standards for Okra, BWG Pepper, Aubergines, Dried Garlic, Chilli Pepper, Dates, Mango Chutney, Chili Sauce, Ware Potatoes, and non-retail container labeling requirements.
