May 25, 2025 – Texas, USA
The Texas Department of State Health Services reported a sharp rise in measles infections on Friday, with the state’s total cases reaching 728—an increase of six since the previous update on Tuesday. Gaines County remains the epicenter, now accounting for 408 cases, up by two in the latest count.

This surge comes as the United States faces its most severe measles outbreak in five years. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 1,046 confirmed cases across 31 jurisdictions as of May 22. Notably, 96% of these cases involved individuals who were either unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. The CDC’s figures do not yet include the most recent Texas data.

The outbreak has not been contained within Texas. Neighboring states are also seeing rising numbers, with New Mexico’s health department reporting 78 cases—an increase of four from earlier in the week. Oklahoma and Kansas have also reported new cases linked to the Texas outbreak.

Measles, a highly contagious airborne disease, can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death. The disease was declared eradicated in the U.S. in 2000, but experts warn that the country is now at a tipping point for its return as an endemic illness.

Public health officials and scientists are urging Americans to get vaccinated. The CDC emphasizes that the measles vaccine is 97% effective after two doses, making it the best defense against infection and further spread.

As the outbreak continues to escalate, authorities are calling for urgent action to increase vaccination rates and prevent further loss of life.
