Hyderabad, February 12, 2025: Authorities in Telangana have intensified measures to prevent the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) following an outbreak in neighboring Andhra Pradesh. In response, poultry vehicles from Andhra Pradesh are being turned back at multiple border checkposts.

Officials on Tuesday halted poultry transportation from Andhra Pradesh to Telangana at Pullur Toll Plaza in Jogulamba Gadwal District. To strengthen containment efforts, the Telangana government has established 24 checkposts along the border, including three in the united Nalgonda district.

District veterinary officials, in collaboration with police personnel, are actively intercepting poultry transport and redirecting vehicles back to Andhra Pradesh. The alert in Telangana was issued after a significant number of chicken deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh due to bird flu.

The Telangana Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries Department have communicated with district Collectors, highlighting the outbreak in other states as well. The Union government has urged all states to enhance bio-security measures to safeguard the poultry industry and prevent the spread of HPAI.

Sabyasachi Ghosh, Special Chief Secretary to the Telangana government, has emphasized the need to raise awareness among poultry farmers, stakeholders, and the public regarding HPAI prevention. In a memo issued to Collectors, he called for restrictions on transporting sick birds and the proper disposal of deceased poultry. Additionally, he instructed officials to report any unusual poultry deaths to the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department.

The Special Chief Secretary has also directed district Collectors to convene high-level meetings involving the Forest Department, Police Department, Health Department, and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department. These discussions aim to formulate and enforce effective strategies to prevent the disease from spreading into Telangana.

The bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in the East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, prompting heightened surveillance and precautionary measures in Telangana.
