Hyderabad, August 4, 2025: Telangana has cemented its position as the national leader in organ donation for 2024, registering the highest deceased organ donation rate in India for the year. This achievement was formally recognized at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day event in Delhi, where Telangana received the distinguished NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) Award.

According to official data, Telangana recorded an organ donation rate of 4.88 donors per million population (pmp) in 2024, dramatically surpassing the national average of just 0.8 pmp. The state reported 188 brain-dead donors over the year, whose selfless contributions enabled life-saving transplants for 725 recipients. This outstanding performance is attributed largely to the continued efforts under the Jeevandan programme, a state-run initiative launched in 2012, which has facilitated organ and tissue donation from 1,673 deceased donors and enabled over 6,300 successful transplants since its inception.

At the award ceremony, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda lauded Telangana’s “spirit of giving compassion, hope, and triumph of life over loss,” emphasizing the significance of public participation, robust infrastructure, and a system built on ethical practices. State Health Minister D. Rajanarasimha expressed pride in Telangana’s commitment to inclusivity, reiterating that the state’s adoption of the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA) ensures organs are available to all sections of society.

The central government event also highlighted the concerning gap that persists at the national level: India performed a record 18,900 organ transplants in 2024, placing it third globally, yet the national rate of deceased donors remains below 1 per million population. The drive to raise awareness and dispel myths about organ donation continues nationwide, as only a collaborative approach between government, health professionals, and citizens can sustain and improve these life-saving outcomes.
