Hyderabad: Telangana is set to become a trailblazer in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for cancer screening, marking a significant leap in the state’s public healthcare transformation. The new initiative, led by the state health department, aims to harness AI-driven diagnostics to improve early detection and treatment outcomes for oral, breast, and cervical cancers-diseases that account for a major share of India’s cancer burden.

The project will launch with a pilot in three districts, serving as a testing ground for the technology before a planned statewide rollout. High-resolution imaging and precision diagnostics powered by AI are expected to identify health abnormalities with greater accuracy and speed than traditional methods. When an AI-based scan flags an irregularity, results will be promptly forwarded to specialist doctors or oncologists for detailed evaluation, ensuring swift follow-up and care.

Software development for the AI screening system is already underway at the MNJ Cancer Institute. If the pilot proves successful, the government intends to equip all medical colleges in Telangana with this advanced technology. In addition, the creation of dedicated day care centres for cancer screening in each district is under consideration, further expanding access to crucial preventive care.

To ensure effective implementation, medical staff across the state will receive specialized training in AI-driven diagnostics and procedures. Patients who receive abnormal screening results will be referred to MNJ Cancer Hospital and NIMS for further investigation and treatment. To bridge gaps in cancer care, chemotherapy services will also be extended to underserved areas such as Siddipet, Sircilla, and Adilabad, making life-saving treatment more accessible.

Officials highlight that Telangana currently faces a shortage of radiologists, a challenge that the deployment of AI-assisted tools aims to address. By automating and enhancing diagnostic processes, the state hopes to achieve quicker, more accurate diagnoses and ultimately transform cancer care delivery.

The initiative may receive a dedicated budget from the central government, reflecting growing national interest in leveraging AI to revolutionize healthcare. Telangana’s move aligns with broader efforts to integrate advanced technology into public health infrastructure and improve outcomes for millions.

“This forward-looking initiative aims to enhance early detection through high-resolution imaging and precision diagnostics, potentially identifying health abnormalities with unprecedented accuracy,” sources familiar with the project said.
