Hyderabad, June 19, 2025 — Facing a stern show-cause notice from the National Medical Commission (NMC) over infrastructural and faculty deficiencies, the Telangana Health Department has announced a major recruitment drive to fill 1,651 faculty vacancies across government medical colleges in the state.

The recruitment will target 1,323 posts of Assistant Professors and 328 posts of Associate Professors, as confirmed by the Director of Medical Education (DME), A. Narendra Kumar. This move comes after 26 out of 34 government medical colleges in Telangana received show-cause notices from the NMC, citing inadequate infrastructure, clinical materials, and teaching staff.

The NMC’s action followed its annual assessment, which highlighted significant gaps in academic and administrative infrastructure. The Commission’s notices are intended to prompt corrective measures rather than penalize institutions outright. The DME emphasized that such notices are part of a routine re-evaluation process aimed at strengthening medical education standards nationwide.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the Health Department to prepare a comprehensive action plan to address the deficiencies. An official committee has been set up to study the needs of each affected college, identify immediate priorities, and assess funding requirements. The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report for further action.

Additionally, the DME has ordered the principals of medical colleges and allied hospitals to relieve doctors working on deputation and ensure they report to their designated postings, signaling a broader effort to stabilize faculty positions and improve educational quality.

Background and Challenges

Between 2016 and 2024, Telangana rapidly expanded its government medical college network, announcing 29 new institutions. This unprecedented growth has led to gaps in faculty strength, clinical material, and infrastructure. Senior government doctors have noted that addressing these challenges will take time and sustained investment.
