Mumbai, April 25, 2025 — The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), a premier cancer treatment and research institution in India, has announced the launch of the ‘MenCan’ initiative aimed at addressing the rising incidence of prostate, penile, and testicular cancers among Indian men. This comprehensive program seeks to improve the quality of life for patients through enhanced public education, early detection, multidisciplinary care, and ongoing research.

Rising Cancer Burden Among Indian Men

According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory 2022, India is witnessing a significant increase in male-specific cancers. Prostate cancer cases are projected to reach 41,736 by 2025, while testicular cancer cases are expected to hit 4,640. Penile cancer, often overlooked in public discourse, is also a critical concern with over 11,000 new cases reported this year.

These cancers, though less talked about compared to other forms, have profound impacts on men’s health and quality of life. The MenCan initiative aims to fill this gap by providing targeted awareness campaigns, encouraging regular health check-ups, and promoting early diagnosis.

Multidisciplinary Approach and Lifelong Support

Sudeep Gupta, Director of Tata Memorial Centre, highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing these cancers. “Addressing prostate, penile, and testicular cancers requires coordinated care involving urologists, oncologists, radiologists, and support staff. Public awareness and research are pivotal to improving outcomes,” he said.

Pankaj Chaturvedi, Director of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), emphasized that MenCan is not just about treatment but also about supporting patients throughout their cancer journey. “Our goal is to provide holistic care that extends beyond therapy, ensuring patients receive psychological and social support,” he added.

Dr. Amit Joshi, a leading medical oncologist at Tata Memorial Hospital, stressed the critical role of early detection. “Regular health screenings and awareness about symptoms can dramatically improve prognosis. Men need to be proactive about their health,” he advised.

Looking Ahead

The MenCan initiative represents a significant step forward in tackling male-specific cancers in India. By combining education, early detection, multidisciplinary treatment, and research, the program aims to reduce mortality rates and enhance survivors’ quality of life.

As these cancers continue to rise, MenCan’s efforts could serve as a model for other nations grappling with similar challenges.
