DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzania has reported its first two cases of mpox, marking the virus’s arrival in the nation amidst an ongoing outbreak across several African countries. The Tanzanian Ministry of Health confirmed the cases on Monday, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus within the country.

Health Minister Jenista Mhagama announced via a statement on social media platform X that two individuals exhibiting symptoms of mpox were isolated and tested on Sunday. The results confirmed the presence of the virus.

“Among the suspects, one is a truck driver who traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam,” the statement revealed, highlighting the potential for cross-border transmission.

The confirmation comes on the heels of a report from the African Union’s health agency, which documented 6,034 confirmed mpox cases across 22 African nations since January, resulting in 25 deaths.

Mpox, caused by a virus related to smallpox, is transmitted through close physical contact and presents with symptoms including fever, muscle aches, and distinctive boil-like skin lesions. While often painful, the virus can also be fatal. The virus exists in two subtypes, clade 1 and clade 2.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in August 2024, reflecting the severity of the outbreak.

The Tanzanian government is expected to implement measures to contain the spread of the virus, including enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns. Health officials are urging citizens to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms consistent with mpox.
