Chennai, May 27, 2025 — In a significant move to enhance the well-being of its personnel, the Tamil Nadu Police have expanded their pioneering mental health initiative, ‘Magilchi’, to the West Zone, following its resounding success in Chennai and the southern districts.
‘Magilchi’, which stands for Maximising Ability, Growth, Ideal Lift, Choices, and Independence, is a comprehensive wellness programme designed to address the psychological health of police officers. The initiative, unique in India, is spearheaded by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers who provide support for a spectrum of mental health challenges.
A Groundbreaking Approach
Launched as a pilot project on November 20, 2021, at Chennai’s Guru Nanak College by the then Commissioner of Police, Shankar Jiwal (now Director General of Police), the programme quickly gained momentum. Its success led to the opening of a centre in Madurai in February 2023, catering to the South Zone, followed by another in Tiruvarur in August 2023, covering the Central Zone.
The initiative targets a variety of psychological and behavioural issues, including depression, suicidal thoughts, addictions (such as alcohol and online gambling), aggressive behaviour, and other emotional difficulties.
Impressive Impact
According to the Tamil Nadu Police headquarters, as of May 1, 2025, a total of 2,844 police personnel—1,884 men and 960 women—have benefited from the services provided at the three established centres in Chennai, Madurai, and Tiruvarur.
The programme has received strong backing from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the state government, which has allocated Rs 1.15 crore to set up three dedicated centres. The positive outcomes have been evident, with noticeable improvements in both the personal well-being and professional performance of participating officers.
Now Reaching the West Zone
Building on this momentum, the ‘Magilchi’ programme has now been launched in Coimbatore to serve police personnel in the West Zone, encompassing eight districts and commissionerates including Coimbatore, Salem, and Tirupur.
“The success of the programme is evident in the positive transformation among officers who have participated. The West Zone centre will allow us to extend this essential support system to more members of the force,” the police headquarters noted in a statement.
By prioritising mental health, the Tamil Nadu Police are setting a new standard for police welfare across the country.
