Coimbatore, May 8, 2025: In a significant move to enhance early cancer detection and treatment accessibility, the Tamil Nadu Health Department is set to launch Organised Cancer Screening Programmes across twelve districts. This initiative primarily targets the rural population, aiming to diagnose cancer symptoms early and provide timely medical assistance.

The pilot project will commence on May 9, 2025, under the aegis of the National Health Mission (NHM). The selected districts for this programme include Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dharmapuri, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Theni, Madurai, Tiruchy, and Karur. These districts were chosen based on the prevalence of cancer cases, ensuring focused intervention where it is most needed.

A senior health department official explained that the programme is designed to bring cancer screening directly to the village level. “Currently, cancer diagnosis and treatment are largely confined to government and private hospitals, which many rural residents find difficult to access. This often leads to late detection due to symptom misinterpretation or neglect,” the official said.

To prepare for the initiative, district-level training sessions have already been conducted for field staff who will operate the screening camps. These camps will facilitate early diagnosis and offer counselling to individuals exhibiting cancer symptoms. Those identified with potential cancer signs will be referred to nearby government hospitals for further evaluation and periodic treatment.

This proactive approach aims to reduce the cancer burden in rural communities by encouraging more people to undergo health checks and receive appropriate care at the earliest stage of the disease.
