Chennai, July 10, 2025 — In a significant development for medical education in Tamil Nadu, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted conditional approval to 35 government medical colleges (GMCs) across the state. This move comes after these institutions received show-cause notices from the NMC in May, citing critical deficiencies in faculty numbers and essential services, including laboratory and surgical facilities.
According to official sources, the approval is contingent on the colleges addressing the highlighted shortcomings — primarily staff shortages affecting up to 95% of departments such as general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, and dermatology — within a four-month window. The NMC’s action previously excluded only Madras Medical College and Government Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, which were not issued show-cause notices.
Some of the prominent colleges that received notices include Stanley Medical College and Omandurar Medical College. The NMC had initially given these institutions seven days to submit written clarifications regarding the deficiencies.
Officials report that as of this week, all 36 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu have now received the necessary approvals to proceed. The timing is crucial, as admissions for MBBS and BDS courses for the academic year 2025-2026 are about to commence. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research’s selection committee has been awaiting the NMC’s clearance to finalize and announce the counselling schedule. This year, the committee received a record 72,943 applications for MBBS and BDS programs, with 5,050 MBBS seats available across the state’s government medical colleges.
Authorities also acknowledged ongoing efforts to resolve issues with the implementation of the Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance system, another area flagged by the NMC during inspections.
“All 35 colleges got the approval on the condition that they rectify the shortage of staff and other deficiencies specified in four months,” an official source told The New Indian Express.
