West Bengal, January 31, 2025 — In a concerning development, three suspected deaths attributed to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported in West Bengal over the past few days. The victims, including a 10-year-old boy, a 17-year-old teenager, and a 48-year-old man, passed away in government hospitals in Kolkata and Hooghly district. While health officials have yet to confirm the cause of these deaths, there are growing concerns about the spread of this rare neurological condition.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a serious but rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, typically manifests with symptoms such as sudden muscle weakness, numbness, and, in some cases, paralysis. It is often triggered by bacterial or viral infections.

Despite the tragic deaths, West Bengal’s health department has reassured the public that there is no cause for panic. A senior health official emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored and that health facilities are prepared to handle any further cases.

In addition to the three reported fatalities, four children are currently undergoing treatment for suspected GBS at various hospitals in Kolkata. The health department has urged people to stay informed and report any similar symptoms promptly to healthcare providers.

The authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the deaths, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
