Tsukuba City, Japan – A recent study highlights that individuals with diabetes who recognize and follow their doctor’s recommendations are significantly more likely to undergo regular diabetic retinopathy examinations. The findings emphasize the crucial role of patient awareness in preventing vision-related complications associated with diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy is a severe complication of diabetes that can lead to blindness. In Japan, clinical practice guidelines recommend that individuals with diabetes undergo a fundus examination at least once a year for early detection and management. However, previous studies indicate that fewer than half of individuals with diabetes in Japan adhere to this recommendation.

To evaluate the impact of patient awareness on screening rates, a research team conducted a secondary analysis using data from a questionnaire survey administered to National Health Insurance beneficiaries in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, during the fiscal year 2022. The study, published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, analyzed the association between recognition of ophthalmology consultation recommendations and the likelihood of undergoing fundus examinations by linking claims data with questionnaire responses.

Among the 290 respondents, those who recognized ophthalmology consultation recommendations were twice as likely to undergo a fundus examination compared to those who did not (72.9% vs. 30.1%). Additionally, individuals who were aware of these recommendations demonstrated a better understanding of the recommended frequency of ophthalmology visits.

The study underscores the importance of enhancing patient education and awareness regarding diabetic eye care. Medical institutions and administrative agencies can leverage these insights to strengthen educational initiatives and improve information dissemination, ultimately increasing adherence to fundus examinations.
