Medical professionals in the national capital have reported a significant uptick in cases of stomach flu, also known as viral gastroenteritis, prompting concerns about the spread of the illness in the region.
Stomach flu, caused by a variety of viruses including norovirus, rotavirus, and enteroviruses, is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. These viruses are highly contagious and can spread rapidly through contaminated food or water, close contact with infected individuals, or inadequate hygiene practices.
Dr. Vandana Garg, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Max Hospital, Vaishali, noted a notable increase in patients seeking medical attention for flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea, and viral fever, estimating a surge of 20 to 30 percent in recent days.
“While stomach flu cases are becoming more frequent in certain communities, they are typically self-limiting, resolving within a few days. But antibiotics are not effective against viruses and should not be used unless a bacterial infection is present,” emphasized Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Director of Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospital in Delhi. He revealed that his facility is witnessing an average of 6 to 7 cases daily.
The medical community underscored that young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to severe complications from stomach flu, such as dehydration and malnutrition. Furthermore, individuals with underlying health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, as well as those with recent travel history, are at increased risk.
In light of the surge in cases, healthcare professionals have emphasized the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of these viruses. Recommendations include maintaining a nutritious diet, practicing frequent handwashing, avoiding crowded places, wearing masks, and minimizing contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness.
As the medical community works to address the rising number of stomach flu cases, public awareness and adherence to preventive measures are crucial in mitigating the impact of this contagious illness on the community’s health and well-being.
