São José do Rio Preto, SP – The city is witnessing a dramatic surge in pediatric respiratory illnesses, with cases increasing by nearly 500% since the beginning of the year, according to the municipal Health Department. This spike is attributed to the onset of dry weather and cooler temperatures, conditions that typically favor the spread of respiratory viruses.

Alarming Numbers in Pediatric Care

Between January and April 2025, the number of pediatric visits to the city’s Urgent Care Units (UPAs) soared from 333 to 1,927. The main culprit behind this surge is the increased circulation of respiratory viruses, particularly affecting children. Bronchiolitis, a common viral infection in young children, has been especially prevalent.

The crisis is not limited to public health services. The largest private hospital in São José do Rio Preto also reported an increase of over 500% in the number of children presenting with flu-like symptoms during the same period. In many cases, these illnesses have escalated to severe conditions, requiring hospitalization.

Hospitals at Full Capacity

The Hospital da Criança e Maternidade, a regional reference for pediatric care, has reached 100% occupancy in both its general ward and pediatric ICU. Hospital administrators report that most admissions are for children suffering from flu symptoms.

Guidance for Parents and Guardians

Given the strain on healthcare facilities, local authorities are urging parents to seek emergency care for children only in serious situations, such as difficulty breathing, high fever, or severe malaise. For milder symptoms, families are encouraged to visit Basic Health Units (UBSs) or use the city’s free telemedicine service, available at 0800 77 22 123.

Public Health Recommendations

  • Monitor Symptoms: Watch for signs of respiratory distress, persistent high fever, or lethargy in children.

  • Use Telemedicine: For non-urgent cases, utilize telemedicine or visit UBSs to avoid overwhelming emergency services.

  • Preventive Measures: Maintain good hand hygiene, avoid crowded places, and ensure children are up to date with vaccinations.
