KUALA LUMPUR, May 2, 2025 – Health authorities in Malaysia’s northern Borneo state of Sabah have temporarily closed five schools following a significant surge in hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases among young children.

According to a recent statement from the Sabah Health Department, over 4,300 HFMD cases were reported from January through April 2025. Nearly 83 percent of these cases involved children under the age of seven, highlighting the vulnerability of this age group to the contagious viral illness.

Sabah Health Director Maria Suleiman, an expert in health crisis management, explained that the closures are a precautionary step. “The temporary closure allows for thorough cleaning and disinfection of affected premises to break the chain of infection,” she said.

Dr. Suleiman emphasized that all reported cases have been mild, with patients treated as outpatients. Importantly, there have been no admissions to intensive care units or reported deaths linked to the outbreak. She urged parents to keep symptomatic children at home and to maintain strict hygiene practices, including regular disinfection of commonly used items, to help curb the spread of the disease.

HFMD is a common viral illness that typically affects infants and children under five years old, causing fever, mouth sores, and a rash on the hands and feet. While generally mild, it can spread quickly in childcare settings and schools.

The Sabah Health Department continues to monitor the situation closely and is working with local education authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
