Gujarat, India – Gujarat’s Sahyog Leprosy Trust is celebrating an extraordinary achievement as its founder and director, Suresh Soni, has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award. Recognized for his decades-long dedication to the welfare of leprosy patients, Soni’s altruistic efforts have transformed countless lives.

Established in 1978, the Sahyog Leprosy Trust is a sanctuary for those marginalized by leprosy and other disabilities. Located in Raigarh village near Himmatnagar, it spans 31 acres and currently houses over 1,000 residents, including 436 disabled individuals, 250 leprosy patients, 80 mentally ill persons, and 26 HIV-positive individuals. The Trust also extends support to people from neighboring states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.

Suresh Soni, a former professor, made the life-altering decision to quit his job and dedicate himself to serving society’s most vulnerable. Supported unwaveringly by his wife, Indiraben, Soni built a haven for those shunned by society. Indiraben, an integral part of the Trust, continues to actively contribute to its operations.

“This award is not just for me but for everyone who has supported this journey,” Soni told IANS. “I thank the Central government for recognizing our work and the plight of leprosy patients.”

What sets the Trust apart is its self-reliant model. Despite housing over a thousand residents, it operates solely on public donations, refusing government aid. “When someone gets leprosy, their family and society abandon them. Our Trust is their only hope,” Indiraben shared.

Soni, now in his eighties, remains a symbol of resilience and dedication. His resolve for social service was evident even before his marriage, as he wrote a 17-page letter to his future wife, detailing his commitment to a simple life dedicated to social welfare.

Over 37 years, Suresh Soni has earned the admiration and respect of his community, becoming a beacon of hope for the destitute and marginalized. His recognition with the Padma Shri underscores his tireless efforts and serves as an inspiration for all.
