New Delhi, May 17, 2025:
The Supreme Court has once again postponed the hearing on a crucial petition demanding greater transparency in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post-Graduation (NEET-PG) 2024. The matter, which was scheduled for consideration on May 15, will now be heard on Tuesday, May 20.

Petitioners Demand Transparency

The petition, spearheaded by Dr. Ishika Jain and others, is being represented by Senior Advocate Nikhil Goel, along with Advocates Tanvi Dubey and Avani Bansal. The petitioners have been vocal about the need for the release of NEET-PG answer keys and question papers, as well as the implementation of broader transparency measures in the examination process.

During the hearing, the petitioners’ counsel stressed the urgency of the matter, especially with NEET-PG 2025 set for June 15, 2025. They argued that a swift resolution is necessary to ensure fairness for current and future aspirants.

Key Issues: Normalisation and Transparency

The court heard arguments regarding the normalisation of marks and the revaluation of answer keys. The petitioners clarified that they do not oppose the normalisation process itself but are seeking transparency in its implementation. They also highlighted the lack of answer keys, individual score breakdowns, and an effective grievance redressal mechanism for NEET-PG candidates.

The National Board of Examinations (NBE), which conducts NEET-PG, requested more time to review the case. The NBE’s counsel noted that the exam is also used for super-speciality courses, adding complexity to the issue.

Ongoing Struggle for Reform

The Supreme Court acknowledged that the issues of normalisation and transparency are distinct and scheduled the next hearing for May 20. Petitioners pointed out that similar pleas have been brought before the court since 2020, but no substantial resolution has been achieved. They emphasized that their objective is to bring about long-term systemic changes, not just immediate relief for the 2024 batch.

The NBE, on its part, argued that the petition is now “infructuous” since NEET-PG 2024 counselling has concluded. However, petitioners countered that the lack of transparency in NEET-PG remains a persistent concern affecting thousands of medical aspirants every year.

What’s Next?

With the next hearing set for May 20, all eyes are on the Supreme Court to see whether it will mandate reforms to enhance transparency in NEET-PG or maintain the status quo. The outcome could have a significant impact on future medical entrance examinations in India.
