A new WHO-commissioned systematic review finds no association between mobile phone use and various cancers.

A systematic review published in Environment International and commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) has found no association between exposure to radio waves from mobile phones and an array of cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid, and oral cavity cancers.

The study was led by Associate Professor Ken Karipidis of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). This marks the second WHO-commissioned review he has spearheaded on the topic. His prior study, published last year, found no link between mobile phone use and brain or other head cancers.

Comprehensive Review of Cancer Risks

The latest study examined all available evidence regarding exposure to radio waves from mobile phones, mobile phone towers, and occupational exposure.

“We considered all other cancers, but we could only properly assess the association between radio waves and leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid, and oral cavity cancers,” said A/Prof Karipidis.

While the findings suggest no link, he noted that the certainty of these results is lower compared to the previous systematic review on brain cancers. This is due to a smaller body of research on these specific cancer types and a lack of replication in multiple studies over an extended period.

“As the Australian Government’s primary radiation protection authority, ARPANSA will continue to undertake research and assess all the available scientific evidence that underpins its radio wave exposure standard and public health advice,” Karipidis stated.

Extensive Study Base

ARPANSA research scientist Rohan Mate, who contributed to the review, emphasized its significance in addressing public concerns.

“This systematic review considered over 5000 studies and included 26 studies in the final analysis,” Mate said. “Occasionally, we get questions from the public about the association between wireless technology and cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. It’s great that we now have this comprehensive review to add to the body of knowledge.”

WHO’s Ongoing Assessment

The WHO is currently preparing an updated assessment on the health effects of radio wave exposure. This forthcoming Environmental Health Criterion Monograph will incorporate findings from this and other systematic reviews commissioned by WHO.

Disclaimer: While this study finds no confirmed link between mobile phone use and certain cancers, the scientific community continues to investigate potential long-term effects. As research evolves, public health guidelines may be updated accordingly.
