A new review of existing research suggests a need for caution and supervised use of the common painkiller during gestation.
A recent analysis of numerous studies has raised significant concerns regarding the widespread use of paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, during pregnancy. The findings, which were published in a peer-reviewed journal, indicate a potential link between prenatal exposure to the over-the-counter pain reliever and an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in newborns.
Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the U.S. conducted a comprehensive review of 46 previously published studies. While paracetamol is generally considered safe for managing pain and fever during pregnancy, the new analysis suggests that higher-quality studies are more likely to reveal a correlation between its use and these neurological risks.
The study’s authors explain that paracetamol has the ability to cross the placental barrier, which could lead to hormonal disruptions and epigenetic changes that may adversely affect the development of the fetal brain. Given the high prevalence of paracetamol use among pregnant women globally, these findings carry important public health implications.
The new research does not call for a ban on the medication but rather advises a more cautious approach. The authors recommend that pregnant women use paracetamol sparingly, for the shortest duration possible, and only under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
