A new study published in Clinical Psychological Science sheds light on the potential risks and benefits of meditation, calling for a more balanced and informed approach to its practice. According to the research, people who meditate may experience unexpected or difficult effects more frequently than previously thought, underscoring the need for greater awareness and understanding.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Melbourne’s Contemplative Studies Centre, surveyed 886 U.S. adults who were representative of the meditating population. The findings revealed that:

  • 96% of participants reported unusual experiences such as a change in their sense of self, profound feelings of bliss, or a loss of boundaries between self and others.
  • 58.4% reported adverse effects, including unpleasant or harmful side effects—physical, psychological, or social.
  • 9.1% of participants reported functional impairment due to these adverse effects.

Associate Professor Nicholas Van Dam, the study’s lead author, emphasized the importance of understanding meditation’s potential adverse effects, especially as it becomes increasingly integrated into health and wellness routines. “With meditation becoming as common as accessing mental health services in the U.S., it is critical that we gain a deeper understanding of its potential risks,” said Van Dam. “As many individuals incorporate meditation into their New Year’s wellness resolutions, this research serves as an important reminder that while meditation can benefit many, it can also be harmful for others.”

The study also highlighted concerns about the growing popularity of meditation programs, especially those offered through apps and online platforms, which often lack regulation. “Meditation is now used just as frequently as mental health services, but the industry remains largely unregulated, leaving users vulnerable to potentially harmful experiences,” Van Dam explained. “There is a widespread belief that any issues are the meditator’s fault, but this study shows that’s not the case.”

As meditation becomes a staple in modern wellness culture and is increasingly recommended by healthcare providers, the research advocates for a more nuanced, informed approach to its practice. Van Dam stressed the importance of providing appropriate guidance and support, particularly for those who may encounter challenges while meditating.

This study serves as a timely reminder to approach meditation with awareness and consideration for its potential impact on mental and physical well-being.
