A recent study exploring the amalgamation of cannabis use and exercise revealed intriguing insights, shedding light on the effects of marijuana consumption on physical activity, mood, and performance. The research, published in the journal Sports Medicine, unearthed multifaceted effects among cannabis-using athletes.

Led by Laurel Gibson, a research fellow from the University of Colorado, the study surveyed 42 individuals who incorporated cannabis into their running routines. Participants were divided into groups instructed to use either a predominantly cannabidiol (CBD) or Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-dominant strain, two active compounds found in cannabis.

Gibson noted that cannabis intake before exercise significantly heightened positive mood and enjoyment during physical activity, regardless of whether participants used THC or CBD. However, a notable distinction arose: THC intake seemed to intensify the effort required during exercise, contrasting with the relatively smoother experience reported by CBD users.

The research highlighted an intriguing discovery: despite THC’s reputation for intoxicating effects, CBD users reported an even greater elevation in mood, hinting at potential mood benefits without the cognitive effects commonly associated with THC.

Senior author Angela Bryan, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at CU Change, offered insights into the contrasting experiences of THC and CBD users. Participants in the THC group reported increased perceived effort during exercise, potentially attributed to the compound’s impact on heart rate.

Contrary to the belief that cannabis might enhance athletic performance, the study dispelled this notion. Previous findings from Bryan and Gibson’s remote study indicated a decrease in running pace by 31 seconds per mile while under the influence of cannabis.

Bryan emphasized, “It is pretty clear from our research that cannabis is not a performance-enhancing drug.”

The study provided a nuanced understanding of how cannabis impacts exercise experiences, showcasing its potential to enhance mood and enjoyment during physical activity. However, the findings suggest a trade-off: while it may elevate mood, THC may heighten the perception of effort, impacting overall exercise performance.
