Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, both government and private medical colleges across the country will be evaluated based on the quality of education they offer. The National Medical Commission (NMC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Quality Council of India (QCI) in July to oversee the assessment and ratings of these medical institutions.

Currently, only government medical colleges are obliged to participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), according to Dr. Yogendra Malik, a member of the NMC’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board.

Dr. Malik emphasized, “QCI provides an independent third-party assessment mechanism for products and services, aiming to enhance quality through nationally recognized accreditation of testing, inspection, and certification bodies. This marks the first instance of medical colleges being evaluated and ranked on various criteria. This initiative will instill accountability, uphold high standards, and assist students in choosing the right medical college.”

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC is tasked with conducting inspections for granting permission to establish new medical colleges, expanding MBBS/PG/super-speciality seats, and renewing permissions for existing medical colleges.
