The Maharashtra Health Department has issued a warning following a significant increase in suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, now numbering 149, with 124 confirmed diagnoses. According to a press release issued on Saturday, there have been five suspected deaths, and 28 patients are currently dependent on ventilators for respiratory support.

Regional data reveals the extent of the outbreak, with 29 cases reported in Pune Municipal Corporation, 82 in newly incorporated villages of Pune, 17 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 13 from Pune Rural, and 8 from other districts. The department confirmed that Saturday alone saw three new suspected cases.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. The Public Health Department has been closely monitoring the situation, with investigations into possible environmental and viral triggers underway.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is leading the investigation and has pointed to potential bacterial and viral sources. Initial testing has identified the presence of Campylobacter jejunum bacteria and norovirus in samples from affected individuals. The authorities are continuing their examination to understand the precise cause of the outbreak.

In response to the alarming rise in cases, the Union Health Ministry has deployed a multi-disciplinary team to Pune to assist with on-the-ground interventions and ensure coordination with state health authorities to mitigate further spread.

The situation remains under active surveillance as the health department urges the public to remain vigilant.
