Frankfurt – Lars Klingbeil, leader of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), has publicly shared his personal battle with tongue cancer, shedding light on the disease and its early warning signs. Diagnosed in 2014, Klingbeil revealed in a recent interview on the ZEIT podcast “Alles gesagt?” that his experience with cancer profoundly changed his outlook on life and politics.

Klingbeil described how he discovered the cancer himself after noticing symptoms and sought medical advice. At the time, he was a heavy smoker, consuming up to 40 cigarettes a day, a habit he now calls “pretty stupid.” He emphasized that tongue cancer is a serious condition with limited chances of cure, calling his own recovery a “miracle.” After treatment, he has been cancer-free for over a decade and credits the experience with giving him a calmer, more reflective approach to life and leadership.

Tongue cancer, a form of oral cancer, affects more than 13,000 people annually in Germany alone, with men over 50 being particularly at risk. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption are major risk factors, with their combination increasing the risk dramatically-up to 100 times for women and 38 times for men. The disease often begins with subtle symptoms that can easily be overlooked, making early detection crucial.

The first signs of tongue cancer typically include:

  • White or red patches on the tongue

  • Sore spots on the edges or underside of the tongue

  • Stinging or burning sensations

  • A foreign body or numb feeling in the mouth

  • Bleeding or increased salivation

  • Bad breath

As the disease progresses without treatment, symptoms may worsen to painful ulcers, swelling, difficulty swallowing, speech problems, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. General symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss may also accompany the disease.

Treatment usually involves surgery, possibly followed by radiation or chemotherapy. Early-stage tongue cancer confined to the tongue has a five-year survival rate of around 80 percent. However, if the cancer spreads to surrounding tissues, the prognosis worsens significantly.

Klingbeil’s openness about his cancer journey highlights the importance of awareness and early screening, especially for those with known risk factors like smoking and alcohol use. His story serves as a reminder of the potential severity of tongue cancer and the life-changing impact of early diagnosis and treatment.
