New Delhi, India – March 27, 2024 – Eleven years ago today, the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Region achieved a historic milestone, being certified free of all wild polioviruses. In a statement released today, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, Saima Wazed, commemorated this achievement while emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance.

“Eradicating polio in our region was a daunting and uphill task,” Wazed stated. “It required relentless effort, innovative strategies, and the commitment of countless parents, volunteers, health workers, communities, immunization program managers, stakeholders and partners across the Region.” She paid tribute to the tireless efforts of those who ensured every child was vaccinated against the debilitating disease.

Despite this significant achievement, Wazed cautioned that the threat of poliovirus importation remains until polio is eradicated globally. “Our work is not over,” she stressed. “A key role in sustaining our ‘polio-free’ status is played by surveillance and activities, which are indispensable for the detection and prompt interruption of poliovirus circulation. We must remain vigilant in surveillance and immunization and ensure adequate capacities and capabilities at the country level are maintained.”

The Regional Director urged all countries, communities, and partners to continue supporting immunization programs and strengthening health systems, building on the success achieved against polio to combat other vaccine-preventable diseases.

In her statement, Wazed also addressed the prevalent issue of misinformation and disinformation surrounding vaccines. “As we mark this landmark public health success, I am mindful that there is much misinformation and disinformation currently circulating about vaccines and immunization,” she said. “I urge you all to help combat this by joining us in spreading the indisputable message that vaccines are safe, and immunization saves lives.”

Wazed concluded by thanking those who champion vaccines and immunization, reiterating the commitment to a polio-free future and the battle against all vaccine-preventable diseases.
