Tumakuru, Karnataka – May 3, 2025:
In a landmark step towards sustainable healthcare, ten Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across rural Karnataka have been equipped with advanced solar power systems under the ‘Swasthya Kiran’ initiative. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Signify (formerly Philips) in collaboration with the SELCO Foundation, aims to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and bolster healthcare services in underserved regions.

Each PHC has been fitted with a robust 5 kWp solar panel system and supporting infrastructure, enabling round-the-clock medical services even in areas prone to frequent power outages. The initiative is projected to save approximately 70,000 units of electricity annually, resulting in significant cost savings for the healthcare sector and reducing the carbon footprint.

At the official inauguration event in Tumakuru, project leaders and local officials emphasized the transformative impact of reliable power on healthcare delivery. “With uninterrupted electricity, we can provide better patient care, operate critical medical equipment, and store vaccines safely,” said one official. The project is expected to serve as a model for similar sustainable interventions across India.

The ‘Swasthya Kiran’ initiative highlights the growing role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in bridging infrastructure gaps and promoting renewable energy solutions in rural India.
