New Delhi, April 26 – Forget strenuous gym sessions – just three minutes of moderate daily activity, like doing chores or carrying groceries, could significantly slash the risk of heart problems in older adults, according to a compelling new international study.

Research led by the University of Sydney, in partnership with UK institutions, suggests that incorporating brief periods of incidental physical activity (IPA) into daily routines offers substantial cardiovascular benefits, particularly for individuals who do not engage in structured exercise programs. Activities as simple as cooking, cleaning, or tending to a garden can contribute positively to heart health.

The study, published in the prestigious journal Circulation, highlights that even minimal movement makes a difference. “Any daily IPA of moderate or vigorous intensity was associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk,” the researchers stated, emphasizing the power of small, everyday actions.

To reach these conclusions, the research team analyzed data from 24,139 participants who identified as non-exercisers. These individuals wore wrist monitors to track their activity levels accurately. The results were clear: those who managed at least three minutes of moderate-intensity activity per day showed a reduced risk of experiencing heart attacks, strokes, or dying from cardiovascular-related causes.

The findings underscore the importance of breaking up sedentary time. Researchers advise incorporating several short bursts of activity throughout the day, rather than relying on one single period, to maximize the long-term benefits for heart health. This suggests that simply moving more frequently, even for very short durations, can be a powerful tool for cardiovascular wellness in the senior population.
