Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, April 30, 2025:
A devastating road accident on Wednesday claimed six lives, including five second-year MBBS students from Narayana Medical College, when a car lost control and crashed into a house along the Mumbai National Highway near Potireddypalem in Nellore district.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the group of medical students was returning to their hostel after attending the engagement ceremony of a friend’s sister in Buchhireddypalem. The vehicle, travelling at high speed, reportedly flipped multiple times before ramming into a roadside house near a petrol bunk. The impact was so severe that a resident of the house, identified as 50-year-old Venkata Ramanaiah, died instantly.
All six occupants of the car were critically injured and rushed to a private hospital in Nellore. Despite emergency medical efforts, five of the students succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as Jeevan Chandra Reddy (Nellore), Naresh Naik (Anantapur), Abhishek Raj (Anantapur), Abhishashi Purshottam (Tirupati), and Yagnesh (Prakasam). Another student, Navneet Shankar (Kadapa), remains under treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Local residents quickly alerted authorities and emergency services, facilitating the swift transport of the injured to hospital. Preliminary police investigations suggest that the driver may have lost control due to drowsiness or excessive speed, though a full inquiry is ongoing.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community and the medical fraternity. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of government support. Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also conveyed his grief, describing the loss of young, promising lives as “heartbreaking” and calling for urgent improvements in road safety and accountability.
The accident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety on national highways and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
