The Recklinghausen district is currently experiencing a notable increase in norovirus infections, with children and elderly individuals being the most affected groups. According to recent data from the Robert Koch Institute cited by AOK NordWest, there were 762 reported cases of norovirus in 2024, marking a significant rise from the 503 cases recorded in 2023. Jörg Kock, Regional Service Manager at AOK, emphasized the importance of adhering to hygiene practices similar to those used during the coronavirus pandemic, as no vaccine exists for norovirus.

Noroviruses are highly contagious and spread rapidly in communal settings such as kindergartens, nursing homes, and hospitals. Transmission occurs primarily through person-to-person contact or contaminated surfaces, with virus particles also spreading via airborne droplets during episodes of projectile vomiting. Children under five and elderly people are particularly vulnerable to infection.

Symptoms of norovirus infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically last one to two days. Those infected are advised to rest, maintain hydration, and follow a bland diet. Due to their lower fluid reserves, children and seniors are at increased risk of circulatory problems. Isolation and rigorous hygiene are critical to preventing further spread, especially since the virus can continue to be shed for up to 14 days after symptoms subside.

Preventative measures include thorough handwashing with soap and water, using disinfectants effective against noroviruses, washing fruits and vegetables carefully, cooking seafood thoroughly, and laundering contaminated clothing at temperatures of at least 60 degrees Celsius. Maintaining hygiene even after recovery is essential to curb transmission.

This rise in norovirus cases in Recklinghausen reflects a broader trend observed in various regions, where norovirus outbreaks have surged following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions. The virus’s persistence and high contagion rate make it a continuing public health challenge, especially for vulnerable populations.
