Karyakram’s Impact Reflected in Declining Under-5 Mortality Rate

New Delhi, August 5, 2025 – The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), a flagship initiative under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, continues to make significant strides in improving child health across India. According to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) report released by the Registrar General of India, the Under-5 Mortality Rate (U5MR) in rural areas has witnessed a remarkable drop, falling from 51 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 34 in 2022.

Comprehensive Care for Children

Launched to enhance the overall quality of life for children, RBSK provides a comprehensive healthcare framework spanning from newborns to adolescents (0-18 years). The program screens children for 32 common health conditions encompassing the “four Ds”: Defects at birth, Diseases, Deficiencies, and Developmental delays. Children identified with these health concerns are provided free medical management, including necessary surgeries at tertiary healthcare centers, along with sustained follow-up and early intervention services at the district level.

Official Statement

Highlighting the program’s impact, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Anupriya Patel, shared these figures in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to child health and proactive disease management in rural India.
