New Delhi, December 18 — The National Health Mission (NHM) has made remarkable strides in improving healthcare outcomes in India, achieving significant reductions in maternal and infant mortality rates and progressing towards its population health targets.

According to data presented by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in the Rajya Sabha yesterday, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) decreased from 103 per 100,000 live births in 2017-2019 to 97 per 100,000 live births in 2018-20, surpassing the National Health Policy target of 100 by 2020. Similarly, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) dropped from 32 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 28 per 1,000 live births in 2020, meeting its goal for 2019.

The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has also declined, from 2.2 as per the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16) to 2.0 in NFHS-5 (2019-21), achieving the target of 2.1 ahead of the 2025 deadline.

Comprehensive Efforts Under NHM

The NHM, which integrates the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), continues to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare provides technical and financial support to states and union territories (UTs) for strengthening public health systems.

Key initiatives under NHM include:

  • Ayushman Arogya Mandir: Boosting healthcare service delivery.
  • National Ambulance Services and Mobile Medical Units: Increasing emergency and remote healthcare accessibility.
  • Prime Minister’s National Dialysis Programme: Offering free dialysis for patients.
  • Free Diagnostics and Drugs Service Initiatives: Ensuring cost-free essential medical services.
  • Anemia Mukt Bharat Strategy: Addressing anemia through focused interventions.
  • Universal Immunization Programme: Covering millions under vaccination drives.

Ayushman Bharat Impact

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), India’s flagship health insurance scheme, continues to provide financial protection for economically vulnerable families. As of December 12, 2024, over 36.16 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued, benefiting rural and urban families alike. Notably, 29.87 crore cards were distributed to rural beneficiaries.

The scheme offers an annual benefit of ₹5,00,000 per family for medical expenses, including diagnostics, hospital stays, and post-treatment care.

Future Prospects

The achievements under NHM underscore India’s commitment to advancing universal healthcare. While milestones have been met, the government continues to focus on initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan to eliminate tuberculosis and further strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.

This holistic approach reaffirms India’s progress toward providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to all.
