A wave of outrage and protest has swept through the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, following grave allegations of mental harassment and abuse against the institute’s Director. According to protesting MBBS and BDS students, the Director allegedly made deeply disturbing remarks, including instructing students to “dance naked” and “commit suicide,” and threatening to “hang them.” These accusations have ignited widespread condemnation and calls for immediate action.
Protests Erupt on Campus
Hundreds of students marched from the All Manipur Students’ Union Office at DM Campus to the RIMS premises, holding placards with messages such as “We accept punishment, not harassment,” and “Director the Dictator.” The protestors demanded the immediate removal of not only the Director but also the Dean and Sub-Dean, whom they accused of remaining silent and thereby complicit in the alleged abuse.
Despite the intervention of the RIMS Superintendent, who attempted to engage with the students and address their concerns, the protestors refused to enter into dialogue until decisive action was taken against the accused officials.

Videos and photos of the protest have gone viral on social media, drawing national attention to the situation at RIMS. The incident has prompted strong reactions from the medical community, with Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors’ Network (IMA-JDN), expressing disbelief on X (formerly Twitter):
“This is ridiculous! What is happening in Manipur? How is such a director still in her post despite the entire college alleging him of harassment at this level?”
Other medical professionals and student groups have echoed these sentiments, demanding an impartial investigation and immediate relief for the students.
Demands for Accountability
Student representatives have insisted that the silence of the Dean and Sub-Dean in the face of the Director’s alleged actions amounts to complicity. They are calling for the removal of all three officials as a precondition for any further discussion or negotiation.
Institutional Response
