Pune, 31st May 2025:
The Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, has launched a major public health initiative to combat HPV-related cancers across the country. The campaign kicked off with the “Conquer HPV & Cancer Conclave 2025” in Pune, aiming to raise awareness and promote prevention of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and its associated cancers.

Addressing a Major Public Health Challenge

India faces a significant burden from HPV-related diseases, particularly cervical cancer, which is the second most common cancer among Indian women. According to the ICO/IARC Information Centre on HPV and Cancer (2023), India reports over 123,000 new cervical cancer cases and more than 77,000 related deaths annually. HPV is also linked to up to 90% of anal cancers and 63% of penile cancers, affecting both men and women.

Expert Panel Highlights Importance of Early Prevention

The Pune event featured a distinguished panel of medical experts, including:

  • Dr. Meenu Agarwal – Consultant Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist

  • Dr. Shirish Kankariya – Practicing Pediatrician, President, IAP Pune (2024)

  • Dr. Mahima Lalwani – Consultant Obstetrician and Director, Lalwani Mother and Child Care Hospital

Moderated by Dr. Sanjay K. Lalwani of Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College & Hospital, the panel discussed the urgent need for awareness, especially among adolescents and parents, and the crucial role of healthcare providers in guiding preventive care.

The experts emphasized that HPV is not only linked to cervical cancer but also to cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus, penis, and oropharynx. With peak HPV infection rates occurring between ages 15 to 25, early education and timely vaccination are vital.

Affordable Vaccine and Community Engagement

With an affordable HPV vaccine now available in India, the campaign aims to make protection against HPV-related cancers more accessible. “Through these conclaves held across the country, we aim to increase understanding of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cervical and other cancers,” said Parag Deshmukh, Executive Director, Serum Institute of India. He stressed the importance of open dialogue and practical steps toward early detection and prevention.

The Pune conclave concluded with an interactive session involving the audience, reinforcing the campaign’s broader goal: reducing the burden of preventable cancers through informed decision-making and community engagement. The initiative will continue in cities nationwide, providing platforms for credible voices in healthcare to educate and empower the public.
