A senior doctor serving as an assessor for the National Medical Commission (NMC) has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh in exchange for providing a favourable inspection report to a private medical college in Karnataka’s Belgavi.

Details of the Operation

The accused, Dr. Tapan Kumar, who is also the Head of the Department of Anatomy at Murshidabad Medical College, was apprehended during a sting operation in Kolkata. According to officials, Dr. Kumar was caught red-handed while receiving the bribe from representatives of the medical college.

Following the arrest, the CBI, in collaboration with local police, conducted extensive searches at Dr. Kumar’s residences and offices in Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Belgaum. These operations led to the recovery of an additional Rs 44.6 lakh in cash, along with incriminating documents, jewellery, and other materials. In total, authorities seized approximately Rs 54.6 lakh during the investigation.

“The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an accused Senior Doctor working as an Assessor with National Medical Commission (NMC) immediately after receiving a bribe of Rs. 10 Lakh from private persons for issuing favourable Inspection Report regarding their medical college based in Belgavi, Karnataka. An additional cash amount of Rs 44.6 lakh (approx) was also recovered during searches the statement read.

The agency further stated that the accused would be produced before a competent court and that the investigation is ongoing.
