KOLKATA – Dr. Subarna Goswami, a senior doctor who became a prominent figure in the medical fraternity’s movement following the R.G. Kar rape and murder incident last August, has been transferred to Darjeeling and demoted to a lower-ranked position, according to a recent notification from the state Health & Family Welfare Department.

Dr. Goswami, who currently holds the position of Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH)-II in East Burdwan district, has been reassigned as the Superintendent of Darjeeling TB Hospital. This new post represents a demotion, placing him one rank lower than his current designation.

Expressing his reaction to the transfer, Dr. Goswami stated that while he acknowledges his duty as a government servant to accept reassignments, he believes this particular transfer is a clear act of retribution. “My next posting is a rank lower than my current post. Moreover, the hospital where I am being posted in Darjeeling does not have much scope for work. Hardly any patients get admitted there. This is the eighth time I have been transferred under the current Trinamool Congress regime. Out of these eight transfers, five have been at the same rank,” he said.

Despite the perceived punitive nature of the transfer, Dr. Goswami affirmed his commitment to continuing the movement related to the R.G. Kar incident. “My fight will continue. Not just me, but others who were at the forefront of the R.G. Kar movement are also being targeted. I was questioned by police when the movement was at its peak, but I am not scared,” he stated.

During the height of the movement, Dr. Goswami and Dr. Kunal Sarkar, two highly respected senior doctors in the state, were summoned to the Kolkata Police headquarters and questioned by then City Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.

Dr. Utpal Banerjee from the Joint Platform of Doctors strongly condemned the transfer, labeling it as an act of “extreme vendetta.” “We believe this transfer is an act of extreme vendetta. The forum strongly condemns it and demands its immediate cancellation,” Dr. Banerjee said.

The transfer has sparked widespread criticism from medical professionals and raised concerns about potential repercussions for those who voice dissent.
