Ulan Bator, May 31, 2025 — A second child has died from measles in Ulan Bator, Mongolia’s capital, according to the country’s National Centre for Communicable Diseases (NCCD). The nine-month-old patient was admitted in critical condition earlier this week and succumbed to the disease on Friday morning, as confirmed by the NCCD in an official statement.

This latest fatality comes amid a surge in measles cases in the city, raising concerns among health officials and the public. The NCCD has urged parents to be vigilant for early symptoms of measles in children—such as high fever, cough, runny nose, and a widespread rash—and to seek emergency medical care immediately if symptoms appear.

Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, is transmitted through respiratory droplets and direct contact. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, and can lead to severe complications and even death, particularly in young children and pregnant women.

Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, measles remains a significant global health threat. In 2023, an estimated 107,500 people—mostly children under five—died from measles worldwide. The WHO emphasizes that vaccination is the best protection against the disease. Two doses of the measles vaccine are recommended to ensure immunity and prevent outbreaks, as not all individuals develop immunity after the first dose.

In 2023, about 83% of the world’s children received at least one dose of the measles vaccine by their first birthday, while 74% received both recommended doses. Health authorities continue to stress the importance of vaccination to prevent further loss of life and contain the spread of the virus.
