Assam has embarked on a groundbreaking journey to transform healthcare access for its most underserved communities, unveiling a fleet of mobile medical units-including a first-of-its-kind boat clinic-to deliver essential health services where they are needed most. This innovative initiative, spearheaded by MSD Pharmaceuticals in partnership with the Smile Foundation, aims to reach over 25,000 beneficiaries annually across the northeastern state.

Healthcare on Wheels-and Water

The program’s initial phase will see three mobile units deployed in the districts of Darrang, Barpeta, and South Salmara. While Darrang and Barpeta will be served by van-based clinics, South Salmara, characterized by its riverine terrain, will benefit from a specially equipped boat unit. Each mobile clinic comes staffed with doctors, paramedical personnel, and diagnostic facilities, offering free outpatient consultations and medicines to the local population.

MSD Pharmaceuticals’ India Region Managing Director, Rehan A Khan, highlighted the initiative’s focus on preventive healthcare, maternal health, and child immunization. “Improving access to healthcare is deeply embedded in MSD’s purpose. We are proud to expand our CSR programme in Assam to deliver essential healthcare services closer to people in underserved communities,” Khan stated.

Smile Foundation’s co-founder and executive trustee, Santanu Mishra, emphasized the importance of bringing healthcare directly to the doorstep of those who need it most. “Mobile medical units have proven to be a powerful model in bridging access gaps,” Mishra said, aligning with the Foundation’s broader mission of grassroots development.

Bridging Persistent Gaps

Assam’s geography, marked by remote villages and river islands, has long posed challenges for conventional healthcare delivery. The introduction of mobile medical units-especially the boat clinic-addresses these obstacles head-on, ensuring that even the most isolated populations can access vital health services7.

The mobile units are equipped to provide a comprehensive range of services, including diagnostics, preventive care, maternal and child health interventions, and free distribution of medicines. This approach not only improves immediate health outcomes but also raises awareness about preventive practices and immunization, contributing to the long-term well-being of the communities served.

A Model for the Future

The Assam government has previously implemented mobile medical units targeting tea garden workers and their families, with a network of 80 MMUs serving over 514 tea gardens across the state. The new collaboration between MSD Pharmaceuticals and Smile Foundation builds on this foundation, expanding the reach of mobile healthcare into new districts and riverine regions.

As the initiative rolls out, plans are in place to expand the number of mobile and boat units, further enhancing healthcare access for Assam’s underserved populations.

“Our mission has always been to take development to the doorstep of underserved communities and healthcare is a vital part of that vision,” said Santanu Mishra, Smile Foundation.
