Chennai, May 9, 2025 – In a significant move to accommodate the rising number of Indian students aspiring to pursue medical education abroad, Russia has announced an increase in its medical seats for Indian nationals from 8,000 to 10,000 for the academic year 2024. The announcement was made by Consul General Valerii Khodzhaev of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai on Wednesday, May 7.

Speaking at a press event, Khodzhaev highlighted Russia’s longstanding reputation as a top destination for Indian students seeking quality, affordable, and globally recognized medical education. “Students from India have been admitted to Russian universities for the last 60 years. Russia continues to be the top choice for Indian students seeking medical education abroad. Every year, thousands of Indian students head to Russia to pursue a prestigious, globally recognised, and affordable education,” he stated.

The increased allocation of seats is a direct response to the growing demand from Indian students. Russia remains the only foreign country currently in full compliance with the latest National Medical Commission (NMC) of India norms for overseas medical education, making it an even more attractive option for Indian aspirants.

Khodzhaev emphasized the robust learning environment offered by Russian universities, citing their comprehensive curriculum, experienced faculty, and advanced facilities. He noted that these factors contribute to the high quality of medical education that Indian students receive in Russia.

To further promote educational opportunities, the All-India Russian Education Fair for the academic year 2025-26 will be held on May 10 and 11 at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai. The fair will also travel to Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruchirappalli. In addition to medical institutions, the expo will feature science, technology, and engineering institutes offering programs in cutting-edge fields such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and data science.

Participating institutions include Volgograd State Medical University, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Kazan State Medical University, National Research Nuclear University, Moscow Aviation Institute, and Moscow State Regional University.

The move is expected to further strengthen educational ties between India and Russia and provide more Indian students with access to world-class medical education.
