New Delhi, May 3, 2025 – As North India braces for an intense summer, the Centre-run Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital has taken proactive measures to combat the rising threat of heat-related illnesses. The hospital has launched a dedicated heatstroke helpline – 011-23404446 – to ensure timely medical intervention for individuals affected by extreme heat.

Dr. Ajay Shukla, Medical Superintendent at RML Hospital, announced that the helpline is available for the public to report cases of heatstroke, particularly for those found unconscious or suddenly ill due to high temperatures. “Immediate medical attention can be life-saving in such cases,” Dr. Shukla emphasized.

In addition to the helpline, RML Hospital has re-operationalized its specialized heatstroke unit, now equipped with advanced technology to effectively treat patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. This move comes as meteorological forecasts predict record-breaking temperatures in the region.

Dr. Amlendu Yadav, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine, explained the dangers of heatstroke: “Heatstroke can occur when body temperature rises above 105°F. In such cases, the body’s natural cooling mechanism, mainly sweating, fails, and the patient may experience altered mental status or even unconsciousness.”

Highlighting the urgency of timely intervention, Dr. Shukla noted, “Mortality in heatstroke cases can reach as high as 80% if not treated promptly. However, with early management and swift medical care, the fatality rate can be reduced to just 10%.”

The hospital’s initiative aims to raise public awareness about the risks of heatstroke and provide immediate support to those in need as Delhi and surrounding areas face the brunt of the summer heat.
