With non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other liver-related ailments on the rise, health experts are urging the public to prioritize liver health through proactive lifestyle changes. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard gastroenterologist, highlights two critical strategies: reducing alcohol consumption and maintaining metabolic health. He emphasizes that adopting a healthy lifestyle—encompassing a balanced diet, regular exercise, and effective weight management—can significantly improve liver function and overall well-being.

Recent years have seen a notable increase in liver disease cases, particularly NAFLD, which is now recognized as a major non-communicable disease by the Indian government. Community prevalence of fatty liver or related conditions ranges from 9% to 32%, depending on factors such as age, gender, area of residence, and socio-economic status. This means that between one and three out of every ten people could be affected.

Doctors are attributing the surge in NAFLD to sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits, especially in urban areas. The trend is also spreading to rural regions, where increased consumption of junk food and reduced physical activity—such as the shift from walking or cycling to motorized transport—are contributing to the problem. Dr. Ashish Kumar Jha, director of gastroenterology and hepatology at Jayaprabha Medanta, advises at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily, along with a diet rich in fiber and protein and low in fats and carbohydrates.

Specialists also note that other liver diseases, such as hepatitis A and E (often linked to food poisoning in summer), and hepatitis B and C (transmitted via blood), remain significant public health concerns. Maintaining liver health is now seen as essential not only for preventing liver disease but also for reducing the risk of other non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
