Chandigarh: Doctors at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) have sounded the alarm over a growing trend of colorectal cancer among young adults, attributing the rise to poor dietary habits, obesity, and environmental pollution. Once considered a disease of older individuals, colorectal malignancies are now increasingly being diagnosed in people as young as their 20s.
Dr. Yashwant Raj Sakaray from the General Surgery Department at PGI highlighted a sharp increase in young patients presenting with colorectal cancer. According to experts, the institute sees around 5-10 cases of colorectal malignancy in each outpatient department (OPD) session, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and intervention.
Lifestyle and Environmental Factors at Play
Medical professionals attribute this trend to a mix of genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices. Diets low in fiber, excessive consumption of processed foods, lack of physical activity, and rising obesity levels are significant contributors. Additionally, environmental factors such as industrial pollution, particularly exposure to heavy metals, are being examined as potential risks.
Dangers of Seeking Unqualified Treatment
Doctors at PGI have also expressed concern over the number of patients who initially turn to unqualified practitioners, delaying proper diagnosis and worsening their prognosis. Many individuals ignore early symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, blood in stools, and unexplained weight loss, further complicating treatment.
Prevention and Early Detection Key to Reducing Risk
To combat this alarming trend, PGI recently organized a conference focusing on the increasing incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults. Experts emphasized the importance of a high-fiber diet, regular physical activity, early screenings, and public awareness campaigns to help mitigate the risk.
Doctors urge individuals—especially those with a family history of colorectal cancer or persistent digestive issues—to seek timely medical advice and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
