New Delhi, May 16, 2025:
Tensions are rising in South Delhi’s upscale Greater Kailash neighbourhood as residents rally against the construction of a 400-bed private hospital. The project, a joint venture between real estate giant DLF and Global Health Ltd (Medanta), has sparked widespread concern among locals over its potential impact on daily life and the area’s infrastructure.

Community Voices Concerns

The hospital, still in its early construction phase, has become a flashpoint for public dissent. Residents and members of various Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) have organized protests, citing fears of increased traffic congestion, noise pollution, and strain on civic amenities such as parking, sewage, and emergency services.

One resident stated, “We don’t want our peaceful neighbourhood to be ruined by round-the-clock ambulance noise and overcrowding.” Many echoed these sentiments, worried that the hospital’s presence would disrupt the tranquility of Hans Raj Gupta Marg and surrounding streets, affecting over 50,000 residents.

Political Support for Protesters

Former Greater Kailash MLA and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj has publicly backed the protesters. On social media, Bharadwaj criticized the approval process, alleging that permissions were granted without transparency or adequate consultation with local RWAs during the 2021-2022 period when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was under BJP control.

Bharadwaj, recalling his tenure as MLA, emphasized his commitment to opposing the hospital project: “Though I am no longer the MLA, I am still with the people, and I will continue to stand by their fight to protect their neighbourhood.”

Allegations Over Land Use

Adding to the controversy, several residents have questioned the legality of the hospital’s construction, alleging that the land was originally earmarked for charitable purposes and should not be used for commercial ventures. These allegations have intensified calls for a review of the project’s approvals and a halt to ongoing construction.

Lack of Public Consultation

Residents claim that despite repeated objections, there has been no meaningful public discussion or environmental impact assessment regarding the hospital. They argue that such a significant development in a residential area warrants greater transparency and involvement from the community.

The Road Ahead

As protests continue, the fate of the 400-bed hospital remains uncertain. Both DLF and Medanta have yet to issue a detailed public response to the residents’ grievances. The issue highlights the growing tension between urban development and community interests in one of Delhi’s most prominent neighbourhoods.
