Mathura, January 24, 2025

In a shocking incident, resident doctors at Kanti Devi Medical College and Hospital (KDMC&H), Mathura, were brutally attacked in the emergency department while treating two road traffic accident (RTA) patients. The assault, which occurred at 12:30 am on January 24, involved a group of individuals armed with sharp weapons, rods, IV stands, bricks, and mops.

The Indian Medical Association – Junior Doctors Network (IMA-JDN) has strongly condemned the attack and submitted a letter to the Mathura Superintendent of Police (SP), demanding immediate action. According to the letter, the perpetrators also robbed the postgraduate doctors of their gold chain and rings, threatened to use firearms, and hurled abusive language during the assault.

The association’s letter, dated January 24, criticized the inaction of the authorities, stating that even several hours after the incident, no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered. “Only verbal assurances are being given without any concrete steps from the authorities. This lack of action is unacceptable and reflects a grave failure on the part of hospital security, law enforcement, and the administration in ensuring the safety of doctors,” the letter emphasized.

Demands Made by IMA-JDN:

  1. Immediate registration of an FIR against all individuals involved in the assault.
  2. Strict legal action to ensure that no perpetrator goes unpunished.
  3. Enhanced security measures in the emergency and other critical hospital departments to prevent future incidents.
  4. Accountability from hospital administration and police authorities for their failure to ensure doctors’ safety.

“This is not merely an attack on doctors but an attack on the entire medical fraternity,” the IMA-JDN stated. The association warned of statewide protests and legal interventions if immediate and appropriate legal action is not taken.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of medical professionals in high-pressure environments like hospitals, where confrontations with patient attendants can sometimes escalate into violence. Ensuring the safety of healthcare workers is paramount for uninterrupted medical services and the well-being of patients.
