As we step into 2025, many are looking for ways to reset and refresh their routines. One area to focus on is your eating habits. After indulging in festive meals and treats during the holidays, it’s the perfect time to reassess and make healthier choices for the year ahead.

Andrea Delgado, a dietitian at Mayo Clinic, advises that the first step in resetting your eating habits is to eliminate the foods you no longer need, especially those holiday leftovers. “Is your refrigerator still holding onto party food remnants? It’s okay to let them go,” says Delgado. “If you have any remaining food items or beverages that lingered after the holidays, we want to get rid of them.”

But don’t worry about wasting food—Delgado suggests slowly eating the leftovers in smaller portions before parting ways with them. Then, it’s time to ease back into your usual healthy eating routine.

The key, Delgado says, is gradually returning to old habits. “Start introducing vegetables and fruits with most meals,” she recommends. Portion control is another essential aspect of resetting your eating habits. While you don’t need to completely cut out any foods, being mindful of portion sizes and frequency is important for long-term success.

“With nutrition, there is no all-or-nothing approach. We can still enjoy those sweet treats, savory beverages, and desserts. It’s all about how much and how often we have them,” Delgado explains. It’s all about moderation.

Delgado also recommends focusing on nutritious, whole foods like lean protein, whole grains, and fresh produce to support a balanced diet. However, she emphasizes the importance of portion control, which can be achieved by dividing your plate into three sections:

  • One-half: Fruit and non-starchy vegetables
  • One-quarter: Whole grains
  • One-quarter: Protein-rich foods such as legumes, fish, or lean meats

By following these guidelines, you can reset your eating habits and begin the year with healthier choices that will last. It’s not about deprivation, but rather moderation and balance—making small adjustments that will set the stage for success in 2025 and beyond.
