A recent study by Healthians, a diagnostics firm, has revealed that 31% of Indians suffer from high cholesterol, with individuals aged 35-54 being the most affected group, accounting for 34.5% of the cases. The findings, based on three years of health test data, indicate that Kerala has the highest prevalence of high cholesterol at 63%, followed by Karnataka (31.9%), Telangana (27.4%), Maharashtra (27.3%), and Punjab (24.5%).

Rising Lifestyle-Related Health Concerns

India is witnessing an alarming rise in lifestyle-related health issues, primarily attributed to stress, unhealthy eating habits, and sedentary lifestyles. The report highlights that high cholesterol affects men and women almost equally, with 31% of men and 30% of women diagnosed with the condition.

Deepak Sahni, the founder of Healthians, underscored the importance of a collaborative effort involving policymakers, healthcare providers, and individuals to tackle this growing health crisis. He stressed the need for preventive healthcare measures, raising awareness, and promoting healthier lifestyles to curb the increasing prevalence of high cholesterol.

Expert Insights on Preventive Measures

Dr. Gagan Saini, a heart health expert at Healthians, classified high cholesterol as a lifestyle disease, largely stemming from poor diet choices, physical inactivity, and stress. He advised that regular health check-ups, maintaining a balanced diet, and staying physically active could significantly reduce the risk of heart disease associated with high cholesterol.

As lifestyle diseases continue to rise in India, medical experts emphasize the importance of early detection and proactive management to prevent long-term complications such as cardiovascular diseases and strokes.
