New Delhi: Adults in their 40s are urged to undergo regular eye check-ups to prevent vision loss from glaucoma, a chronic and often symptomless eye disease that can lead to blindness if left undetected. The call for vigilance was made by Dr. Tanuj Dada, Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Glaucoma Services at the RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Dada emphasized the importance of early detection of glaucoma, which is frequently referred to as the “silent thief of sight.” “Glaucoma can cause irreversible vision loss if left undetected. If you have no symptoms and are above 40 years of age, it is recommended that you get an eye check-up every two years,” he advised.

The Silent Threat

Glaucoma, or kala motia as it is commonly known in India, is a disease that affects the optic nerve, making it the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally. “The disease often presents no symptoms in its early stages, making regular check-ups essential for timely diagnosis,” said Dr. Dada.

Who is at Risk?

Certain individuals are at higher risk of developing glaucoma. These include:

  • People with a family history of glaucoma.
  • Individuals with diabetes or hypertension.
  • Those who use steroids (in the form of creams, eye drops, tablets, or inhalers).
  • People who have sustained eye injuries in the past.

For those with these risk factors, Dr. Dada strongly recommends annual eye check-ups to detect and manage the condition early.

Rising Concerns in India

Glaucoma-related blindness is a growing concern in India, with studies revealing that in approximately 90% of cases, the disease remains undetected until advanced stages. Lack of awareness and delayed detection are significant contributors to this alarming statistic.

“People with risk factors must get annual eye check-ups to rule out glaucoma. If you are above the age of 60, an annual check-up is a must to prevent blindness from this disease,” Dr. Dada said.

Preventing Vision Loss

Early diagnosis and effective management are key to safeguarding vision. Dr. Dada highlighted that timely treatment can help preserve eyesight for a lifetime, urging people to prioritize regular eye health assessments.

As awareness campaigns intensify, experts hope to reduce the burden of glaucoma-related blindness in India and beyond, ensuring that more individuals can protect their vision and quality of life.

Takeaway: If you are over 40 or at risk for glaucoma, schedule an eye exam every two years—or annually if you’re over 60—to prevent potential vision loss.
