Shillong, India – May 6, 2025: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has temporarily suspended its upcoming recruitment processes following protests led by social groups demanding a revision of the institute’s gender employment ratio. The protesters, primarily represented by the Khasi Students Union (KSU), called for an 80:20 female-to-male employee ratio, sparking significant administrative action.

The decision to pause recruitment was announced on Monday after a series of discussions between government officials, NEIGRIHMS administration, and the KSU. The union staged protests on the NEIGRIHMS campus, advocating not only for the gender ratio reform but also for amendments to the roster registry and the establishment of examination centers across Meghalaya to facilitate fairer recruitment.

Paul Lyngdoh, a government spokesperson, confirmed that recruitment activities would remain on hold until the demands are addressed. “We aim to resolve these issues within a week,” Lyngdoh stated, emphasizing the urgency of the matter. The government plans to engage with the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare to discuss concerns that surpass NEIGRIHMS’ administrative jurisdiction.

Furthermore, the issues raised will be presented to the NEIGRIHMS governing council, chaired by the Union Health Minister, to ensure swift and effective resolution. This move highlights the government’s commitment to addressing gender representation and recruitment fairness within the institute.

The halt in recruitment underscores the growing attention to gender equity in employment within India’s health sector, reflecting broader social demands for inclusive representation.
